Which analogue mono synth - part 2 (this time it's marimbral....)
As promised, here is a follow up comparison - this time with a tuned percussion sound using square waves. There is no agenda here, I'm just curious as to how close I can get with each synth.
As before, the envelopes are critical here, in terms of how they shape the filter. Envelopes seem to be relatively selected in terms of comments comparing synthesizers - most emphasis being on the oscillators and filters - but to me they are critical, particularly on fast changes, where differences in the filter itself may not be that apparent.
As before, I've posted the MIDI file in case you want to use your own synth to try to match the same sound yourself - do send me a message if you do!
Like last time, the very basic riff is played though seven times, once by each synth/plug-in - in a random order, no effects used, just the raw output from each synth. Each one is matched purely by ear, listening on monitors, no signal analysis here - although I might do some later to see what the actual differences are. Again if you want to guess which is vintage, which is modern and which software, simply post in the comments (or send an email).

Osc 1 | square wave | i.e. 50% duty cycle |
Osc 2 | square wave | narrow duty cycle |
Oscillator Mix | equal balance | two octaves apart, a little de-tune. |
Filter | low pass | zero resonance, high keyboard and envelope control, cutoff low. |
Filter Env | zero attack, short decay, low sustain, short release (matches decay)
Amp Env | zero attack, max sustain, short release, slightly longer than filter envelope.
Glide | off | |
Legato | N/A | sequence played non-legato |
No MIDI velocity control. |
